SimBrief is the most popular and most used flight simulation tool. More than 530.000+ users are registered and use SimBrief on a daily basis to create the flight plan that flight simulation enthusiasts will use in their virtual flight.
My Role
Re-create the user interface and bring it into something modern and efficient with a better usability. Research and questioning users about their experience and what they would like to see from SimBrief was the key for the design process.
The idea behind this personal concept.
I decided to make a personal concept of a new SimBrief user interface because I thought it will be a good way to practice my UI/UX skills into a real project. Also, my concept idea may help out the developers improve the existing UI.
Re-designing a user interface of a web tool from scratch, while thousands of people use it everyday, is challenging. I have to consider a lot of thing before I start the design process. I needed to design something similar to the old layout but at the same time to have a better usability and a modern look, without braking the user flow of the app. After the research was done, the average user that use the tool, are of older age and they are not familiar with an online tool. To keep the user flow, the users needed the layout of the tool to remain the same despite the upgrades and that was a good guide for my concept
Process of redesigning a web tool
After the Research was done and I got my results, I started the design of the tool. I started by creating the Styleguide with the colors, fonts, elements and many others design materials that I am going to follow in this project. Initially, I targeted the easiest parts which was the landing page and then a worked on the core page of the tool. The core pages had the biggest makeover of the tool since I added to it a sidebar menu, which was something that I believe was missing from the previous layout, and I my research showed me that it is a necessary element that increases the usability of the web tool. As I said before, the goal of the project was to modernize the already excising tool and improve the experience of the users and after the project was complete it was named as a success.
What i learned so far
Working on a project like this can have various outcomes. I am user of SimBrief too and this made this project of most importance for my career so far. Learning is always part of the life of a UI/UX designer and I learned more than I expected. I had to apply UX methodologies that I have never came across in the past. But the most important lesson was that every project corresponds to an age group and as a designer I have to respect that and build a strategy based on this fact and every other that its getting gathered. Overall, it was a fun project that received very positive feedback!
